Layher SpeedyScaf Frame Scaffolding

The original SpeedyScaf Frame Scaffolding was invented by Layher in 1965. It revolutionized the facade scaffolding construction and still supersedes conventional frame scaffolding, i.e. BilJax, Safway type scaffolding.

The assembly of SpeedyScaf Frame Scaffolding is easy and lightning fast. One great advantage with SpeedyScaf compared to conventional frame scaffolding is that no bracing is needed on the wall side, giving you a maximized work space with no obstructions. This is ideal for stucco work, painters, carpentry etc.

With the Speedy assembly frame Lightweight, the Layher SpeedyScaf equipment has been the recognized leader for decades in insertion-frame systems. Modern, fast and robust, making it ideal for work on facades. Layher SpeedyScaf is, thanks to its versatile and well thought-out range of parts, equally economical to use in scaffolding construction and in professional trades.

Folding Scaffolding

Setting up a scaffolding tower by yourself can be a challenging task. The first base section is usually the trickiest part if you don’t have any help holding the frames while connecting diagonal and horizontal braces.

To remedy this problem you can get a scaffolding tower with a folding base. These bases just folds up and are very easy to handle. Scaffold USA have several different types of aluminum folding scaffolding. The simplest folding model is called Aluspeed. This model is used at the smaller jobs where you don’t need any adjustable legs or platform heights over 12 ft. Aluspeed is available only as Single Wide and 6 ft long.

Aluspeed Folding Scaffolding

Next up is the more advanced Quick-Base folding scaffolding base. The Quick-Base can be used to replace any of the Single Wide or Double Wide bases in the Alufase family.

The Quick-Base compared to Aluspeed comes with horizontal braces that folds, support adjustable legs, single or double width and is available 6, 8 and 10 ft long. The Quick-Base is an optional upgrade available to most scaffolding packages offered by Scaffold USA.

The most advanced folding scaffolding is called Alufold. It is especially made to fit through narrow passages and has whole sections that folds up. You can find more information about Alufold Tank Scaffolding here.

If you ever need to support something in construction work, using post shores is the most common method to achieve this. Post shores, or Lally column as they’re also called are made to extend out and to handle thousands of pounds in load. There are many different manufacturers on the market but the design is fairly similar. Find the one that suits you best by comparing load capabilities, length, price and availability.

You can find several models of Heavy Duty Post Shores and prices on the website for Scaffold USA.

US Style Scaffolding

In United States the most used scaffolding type is a steel frame scaffolding type. There are a couple of patterns that everyone tries to match called BilJax, SafWay and Waco. The difference between them isn’t much except for color and cross brace spacing. This type of scaffolding does not allow for the same freedom as the Euroframe Scaffolding mentioned here earlier since you have cross braces on both sides obstructing the wall you’re trying to work on. The frames are also wider compared to European Style Scaffolding Frames.

Safway Scaffolding
BilJax Scaffolding

Most of these US Style Scaffolding frames allow for some type of climbing on one side and walk through on the other side. It is assembled in sets and each set consist of two frames, two cross braces, stacking pins and spring rivets. This is how they’re sold most of the time but make sure to check that all parts are included, especially if you’re comparing the price.

While this type of scaffolding is considered obsolete compared to modern frame and system scaffolding, it will most likely get the job done. And if low price is a key factor for you, it won’t get any cheaper than this.

Most people use these scaffolding sets with DI65 or LVL Scaffold Plank, but Aluminum and plywood decks are also available.

Scaffold USA has a wide range of BilJax type Scaffolding and SafWay type Scaffolding products available online, click the links for more information and online purchase.

Aluminum Scaffolding Towers

Mobile and rolling Scaffolding Towers have been used for a very long time. The more wobbly obsolete versions are made of steel and the more updated stable modern versions are made of Aluminum.

If you’re looking for something that’s really easy and fast to assemble, has lightweight parts, can be used both inside and outside on delicate surfaces, can be moved around easily, then an Aluminum Scaffolding Tower is your choice. As always when there’s aluminum involved, there’s a max load limitation to consider. In most cases the individual platform (scaffolding deck) sets the limit. Europe has a better system to classify Scaffolding compared to USA. In Europe it is called Load Class and it ranges from 1 to 6, six being the strongest. The US system only use the range Light (25 psf), Medium (50 psf) or Heavy duty (75 psf).

The best professional aluminum scaffolding brands are rated at Load Class III, which translates to 48 psf. Medium duty range starts from 50 psf so the scaffolding gets classified as light duty (25 psf).  The US system is a bit misguiding since the scaffolding is almost Medium duty.

Alufase Aluminum Scaffolding Tower

If you’re looking for the most stable scaffolding tower, aluminum is your choice. But beware for cheaper types. There are two top of the line brands to look for, Alufase and Upright. Both are made in Europe and they are compatible with each other.

Metaltech Aluminum Scaffolding Towers are manufactured in China. Metaltech use a weaker aluminum alloy, so please make sure to compare before you buy.

Things to consider when choosing your Aluminum Scaffolding Tower:

1. Is it welded aluminum or cold deformed? Welded aluminum is not as strong as cold deformed aluminum. The brand Werner is welded whereas Alufase and UpRight Scaffolding use cold deformation.
2. What’s the spacing between the rungs on the frames? The frames are used for climbing inside the scaffolding tower, and although OSHA approves a distance of 400 mm in most US States (16″) also called Span 400, a shorter distance (300 mm, 12″), Span 300, is easier to climb and give a sturdier frame.
3. How many platforms are included? Do they have hatches? Platforms with trapdoors are much more useful compared to solid decks.
4. Guardrails, are they just extra horizontal braces or real sturdy guardrail braces. Both are OSHA approved but the latter is better.
5. Casters (wheels). Many towers come with inadequate casters, either they’re too small or low quality. Bigger casters are easier to roll around. They should also be non-marking to be used indoors.
6. Adjustable legs. It’s normal that the smallest units doesn’t come with adjustable legs, but the higher you go the more important adjustable legs are. They are used to level your scaffolding tower, to adjust for uneven surfaces and also allow you to reach that extra inch.
7. Outriggers. The outriggers, or stabilizers, are used to widen the base of the scaffolding. Remember that you need a 1:4 base height ration to be OSHA compliant. Make sure that you get a tower with real sturdy outriggers that actually widens your base compared to cheaper variants.
8. Single or Double Span? Most manufacturers offer a single wide frame or a double wide frame. This is also called single or double span. The difference between the is the width. Single Wide has room for one platform and double wide has room for two platforms beside each other. Your project decides which type you need. A single span can be more flexible for inside use and the double span gives you more work space.
9. Foldable base? Setting up the base is usually the trickiest part when assembling a scaffolding tower, especially if you’re doing it alone. To remedy that problem you can get a scaffolding tower with a base that folds up. It’s usually optional and cost extra. If you don’t need it, check that it’s at least offered in case you need it later.

Alufase Scaffolding vs Competitors

Tank and Boiler Scaffolding

Some structures have limited access and need scaffolding products designed to fit through narrow manholes. Frame Scaffolding are often too wide to fit through the opening. You could use System Scaffolding but if you’re interested in lightweight and fast assembly you should go for Aluminum Tank Scaffolding. It is constructed to fit through the smallest openings and folds up.

There aren’t too many manufacturers to choose from when you need this kind of special scaffolding. As always we recommend that you choose someone in the top segment who doesn’t cut corners when it comes to quality, design and safety of their products. Our choice is Alufase, a Spanish manufacturer who has one of the best Aluminum Scaffolding products in the world. Alufase has a special product line for Tank Scaffolding called Alufold.

Plan your purchase ahead in good time since availability is often limited with longer delivery times compared to standard scaffolding products. Tank Scaffolding is used everywhere where there’s limited access, ranging from a small tank to huge boiler systems.  If heavy load is a key factor, you should consider System Scaffolding instead of Aluminum Tank Scaffolding.

Frame Scaffolding

There are different types of frame scaffolding and the one we will address in this post is the one often called Euro-Frame Scaffolding. It got this name from its origin in Europe.

This is a walk through frame scaffolding that is very easy and quick to assemble. One major advantage compared to US Style BilJax, SafWay or Waco Frame Scaffolding is that you have the whole wall free to work on since No diagonal braces or horizontal braces are used on the wall side!

Frame Scaffolding are not as flexible as System Scaffolding but it will get most projects done. When it comes to this type of Euroframe Scaffolding we recommend Layher, a European manufacturer that offers absolute top of the line quality. Scaffold USA offers the best price on  Layher Frame Scaffolding (called SpeedyScaf) in the US. You can find prices and various sized pre-designed SpeedyScaf Packages online here.

Modern day System Scaffolding was originally invented and designed by Layher, a company from Germany. Today Layher is the biggest Scaffolding manufacturer in the world. Everything is still made in Germany and quality is at the absolute top.

System Scaffolding, who is also called modular scaffolding and rosette scaffolding, is made up by verticals called standards and horizontals called ledgers. The possibilities with system scaffolding are almost limitless and System Scaffolding is best used in trickier projects and/or when high load capabilities are desirable.

Beware of cheap copies
There are many companies who tries to copy Layher and sell system scaffolding. Unfortunately these copies are often manufactured in third world countries with cheap labor, no concern of environmental effects, low quality steel and an overall bad product with poor tolerances.

Don’t cut corners when it comes to safety and quality of your Scaffolding. Buy original Layher System Scaffolding online from Scaffold USA who has a range of pre-configured System Scaffolding Packages.
